Plant List
The list to the right, divided by category (groundcovers, shrubs, and trees), is designed to help you select plants that will grow well using little water. We recommend that you take this list with you when you visit your local nursery or home-improvement store. Use the information about an individual plant, such as how much sun and water it needs and how big it will grow, to select the right plants for your gardening project.
All of the plants on this list use little water. However, remember that low-water-use plants need adequate watering while they are establishing roots, generally during the first one to two years. After the plant has established roots, cut back on the watering schedule. Using a drip-irrigation system and watering early in the morning and late at night reduce evaporation and save water. How much water a plant will require in your yard is dependent on the soil in the area in which you live and the plant's exposure to the sun and wind.
