Rebates & Incentives Program Being Developed
To encourage High Desert urban water users to be pro-active conservationists, the Mojave Water Agency in partnership with local water providers is developing a Water Conservation Incentive Program.
The program, now in the planning stage, will offer rebates and other incentives to encourage them to adopt conservation measures.
Program Goals: 20% Reduction in Water Use
The program is aimed primarily at outdoor water use, which typically accounts for half of all water use in the High Desert. It also targets the biggest uses of indoor water, involving such items as toilets and clothes washing machines.
The goal is to achieve a 20 percent reduction in per capital water consumption by 2020 throughout the Mojave Water Agency service area. This would free up the High Desert's limited water supplies to accommodate new residents who are expected to populate our rapidly growing region.
How Will It Work?
The conservation program will include a variety of vouchers, rebates and other incentives, depending upon which elements are adopted by a particular local water provider. Included among the program elements would be "smart" outdoor watering methods and landscaping changes to reduce outdoor water use and the installation of water-saving toilets and clothes washing machines to cut indoor water use.
Other program elements being planned by individual water providers involve demonstration gardens to illustrate how attractive landscaping can be created using water-saving native plants and educational classes.
The Mojave Water Agency and participating local water providers are sharing funding for the program.
